Digital Laboratory
The Digital Lab is a new space within MEG for recent graduates, early and mid-career heritage practitioners, art-based researchers, and others working across museum ethnography. It offers a home for independent projects and resource-making. It is envisioned as a platform to test ideas, try methods, and provide support for those looking to build practical experience in the sector. We welcome both experimental and traditional approaches to learning and making.
About the Digital Laboratory
Following MEG’s tradition of being a beacon for collaboration and peer-support, the Digital aboratory opens its doors in February 2027 through its upcoming three and six month pilot residency programmes. As the first step towards a longer-term, better-resourced programme, the Lab is committed to opening doors for early career talent from marginalised and under-represented groups across the industry in the United Kingdom.
Pilot Residencies Project
Accessing the heritage and museum sector after finishing formal studies, changing career paths, or living outside major cities such as London is known to be extremely difficult. It often, comes down to building spaces for ourselves through engagement in extensive unpaid and hidden labour.
Being mindful of these struggles, with accessibility and fairness in mind, MEG within its resources offers structured, hands-on support for those looking to develop their practice and research through a 3-month paid residency programme.
3-Month paid Residency: Residents choose one theme from a selection of contemporary, practice-based museum discussions. Each theme follows the same output and engagement structure. For current open themes, click here.
In addition to this 3-month paid programme, the Lab offers a curated digital space and a supportive network to those with an existing idea and the practical experience to take a project from proposal to reality, drawing on MEG’s institutional backing and resources.
6-Month paid Residency: The resident proposes and develops their own topic, following a similar output structure. More information on the open call will be shared across February 2027.
Open Calls
3-month paid Residency. Rather than trying to demonstrate a broad fit to the program through past experience, when writing your motivation letter, focus on the single theme that speaks to you the most. Why is it of your interest? How would you approach its outputs? Previous residencies or research experiences are not required. We are looking for curiosity, creativity and genuine interest.
